  164. when an ftp reference is given that looks like this:
  165.   ``wuarchive.wustl.edu:/mirrors/msdos/uucp/00-index.txt''
  166. this does not imply that it is the only place where the file
  167. is available via ftp.  you may want to use `archie' to help
  168. you locate the closest (network-cost-wise) copy of the file.
  169.  
  170. for brief help with archie, see the comma intro.

  172. the special entry ``simtel:'' indicates the simtel collection,
  173. available in many places, including CD-ROMs, and its primary
  174. ftp mirror, oak.oakland.edu:/pub/msdos.

  176. the file name reflects the latest version that I knew of (or was
  177. told of) at the time this FAQ was sent out.  if you know a newer
  178. one is available, and there was no announcement posted to comma
  179. after a week or so, please send me the information for inclusion
  180. (or better yet, post the entire announcement to comma so everyone
  181. can get the whole story, instead of just the summary here)

  347. if you are the maintainer of a package, and I have shown a site
  348. that you feel is not appropriate, please let me know.  if I have
  349. shown a frequently-updated mirror site, keep in mind that using
  350. a mirror site that has everything on it may be easier for users than
  351. having to go to a different site for every package.  if I have shown
  352. a site which mirrors, but too infrequently, please inform me of a
  353. better reference.

  355. many of these files come from the simtel repository.  one site
  356. which can handle many ftp users at once holds the files in
  357. wuarchive.wustl.edu:/mirrors/msdos/.  another very large, very
  358. available mirror is ftp.uu.net:/systems/ibmpc/msdos/simtel20.
  359. of course, the main simtel mirror is oak.oakland.edu:/pub/msdos/.

  361. please try to strike a balance between instant availability of
  362. the newest versions and practical ability to handle the transfers.
  363. if your software is available on a bogged down SLIP link and
  364. ftp.uu.net, I would rather point people to the latter.
